2007 Survey of Digital Brands in China

In an annual survey of digital products by a digital magazine in China, among the most favorite digital products among Chinese people include Apple MP3, Toshiba projector, HP printer, Nokia mobile phone and Samsung LCD. On the list of the most popular mobile drive brands, Aigo and Western Digital ranked first and second, respectively, while Seagate was placed fifth.

Seagate to Launch D.A.V.E. Technology-Based Hard Drives in China

China’s consumers are expected to have access to D.A.V.E. technology platform-based hard drives which enable wireless transfer in 2009. Seagate, a member of the iVDR Consortium, said that the company is cooperating with China’s companies on such hard drives, which are expected to become available next year. The D.A.V.E. technology allows users to download, store and play photos, music, video and files through mobile phones and digital camcorders, according to an executive at Seagate.

Seagate Executives Visit Wuxi, Jiangsu Province

Mr. Fang Wei, deputy mayor of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, yesterday met with a group led by Stephen B. Solcher, senior vice president of Seagate. They held discussions on the impact of the current economic conditions in China and abroad on development of companies. Mr. Fang said Seagate has been playing an important role in promoting the economic growth in Wuxi, and that the municipal government will offer more favorable policies to companies.

Seagate to Begin Launching Solid State Drives within This Year

Teh Ban Seng, vice president and managing director, Asia Sales & marketing, Seagate Technology, recently revealed at a ceremony for Seagate’s one-billion-hard-disc-drive milestone that the company will launch its first solid state drives (SSDs) within this year. Seng believes the hard disc drive will not be replaced during the next decade in spite of availability of new storage technologies.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Qingdao, Shandong province, recently ordered Qingdao Ultimate Transportation Equipment Co., Ltd to pay a total of more than RMB1.7 million to three software vendors, Microsoft, PTC and Autodesk, due to use of unlicensed software. Analysts said such intellectual property protection will not only protect interests of software vendors but encourage innovation in China.

Foreign enterprise judged to pay insurance premium though without signing labor contact

A college girl was employed by a foreign company in Shanghai after graduate in July 2007, but the company has not signed a labor contract with her. During the probation period, the girl suffered with schizophrenia and was dismissed by the company. According to the labor arbitration, the company should pay the insurance premium for the employee for the period from July to September 2007, with the reason that there is a facto labor relationship between them, though without signing a labor contract, which was supported by the court of Xuhui district.

Homegrown auto brands shine at Beijing auto show

China FAW Group Corporation displayed 22 homegrown car models at the show, including the eye-catcher Besturn B50, which is a combination of a variety of innovative technologies. 500-KV transformer substation put into production in eastern Fujian province

A 500-KV transformer substation was recently put into production in Ningde, Fujian province, China. The substation is the largest ever of its kind in eastern Fujian and is expected to be able to help improve Fujian’s thermal and nuclear power transmission to other Chinese provinces and optimize East China’s power grid structure. 

Australia's Midwest accepts improved offer from China's Sinosteel

Australian iron ore miner Midwest Corporation Limited has accepted an improved takeover offer from China's Sinosteel Corporation valuing it at AUD 1.36 billion. The AUD 6.38 a share offer, 13.9 percent higher than the AUD 5.6 a share previously, now needs 50.1 percent approval from Midwest shareholders to proceed, Midwest said in the statement to the Australian Securities Exchange.
