Nearly 20 percent of branded products inspected unqualified

The administration for industry and commerce in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou made an inspection on the quality of sun glasses and sports footwear at the end of May. The result shows unqualified products occupied nearly twenty percent of the inspected branded products. According to related regulations, enterprises who do not agree with the results can demur within 15 days. However, related companies including Nike did not request to make a re-inspection.
 

Competition among gaming enterprises in Macau extends to stock market

Jiujiang secures largest order for shipbuilding in China

Jiujiang Yinxin Shipping Group, owner of Jiujiang Yinxin Shipbuilding Co., Ltd and Jiujiang Xiangsheng Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, has inked an order worth US$900 million with Dalian-based Haichang Group Co., Ltd to build twenty 60,000-ton bulk ships. This is the largest shipbuilding order that signed in China and even the world.

International giants in footwear industry transfer manufacturing bases to address challenges resulting from increased cost

The rumor has it that Adidas is prepared to transfer some of its manufacturing bases from China to such countries as India, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, due to the increased wages in China. In addition, Nike requested to move some Chinese footwear manufacturing enterprises out of China. A senior official in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said that “factory of sweat and toil” is not allowed to exist in China, which is another reason for the companies to move out.
 

Ministry of Health Officially Initiates Tobacco Control Plans

Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China officially initiated the public communication campaign on tobacco control between 2008 and 2009 on July 16. According to a responsible official, the Chinese government will issue more tobacco control policies. In addition, Beijing began to ban smoking in ten public places, including primary and middle schools and gymnasiums from May 1, 2008 – a big step toward a smokeless Olympics and a smokeless city.

Profit of K.Wah International expected to rise 45% next year

K.Wah International, focusing on the development and investment of properties in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Singapore, recorded a premium of MOP 1.5 billion after selling 13.7% of shares of Galaxy Entertainment. Excluding non-recurrent proceeds from the sale of Galaxy Entertainment’s shares and the re-estimated increment of properties, the company recorded a premium of MOP 800 million (after-tax). The company is expected to see a profit growth of 45% next year.
 

Bank of China: currency exchange offices benefit visitors

The Bank of China (BOC) is now fully prepared to meet customers’ demand for financial services during the Olympics. Banking branches of BOC in China provide 9,000 currency exchange sites and open currency exchange offices around Games and non-competition venues, hotels and the Olympic Village in six gaming cities. The BOC has worked with Visa to install 26 ATM machines in Olympic venues including Beijing, Qingdao and Hong Kong, offering its services in three different languages, including Chinese, English and French.

Noises from Crown Macau disturb surrounding residents’ normal lives
