Midu, Yunnan makes solid progress in development of forestry industry

Since the beginning of 2008, Midu county, Yunnan province has been accelerating its efforts to boost the development of the forestry industry with focus on the walnut sector. The county produced 615.9 tons of walnut this year, generating an annual output value of RMB 17.2 million (approx US$2.5 million). The wood processing sector experienced steady growth, with an output value of RMB 23.4 million (approx US$3.4 million).

Xinjiang records 91% growth in foreign trade for first four months

According to figures from the customs of Urumqi, Xinjiang recorded a year-on-year increase of 91% in foreign trade to US$5.17 billion for the first four months of this year. Statistics show that exports in Xinjiang rose by 110% to US$4.56 billion, while imports surged by 18.7% to US$610 million. Goods exported mainly include garments and footwear.

Supply of Mainland China's live pigs recovers in Hong Kong

Supply of Mainland China's live pigs is recovering steadily in Hong Kong. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of Hong Kong announced that as of 5:30pm yesterday, 4,640 live pigs from the mainland had been shipped to Hong Kong, expanding the total number of live pigs being supplied in the city to approximately 5,040. Thanks to the sufficient supply, the auction price in Hong Kong has dropped from HK$40 per kilogram last week to the normal level of HK$26 per kilogram, according to an executive at the Hong Kong Pig Raising Development Federation Limited.

Prices of live pigs and pork may continue to fluctuate despite increased supply of live pigs

As Ng Fung Hong yesterday increased the supply of live pigs, the wholesale price of live pigs declined accordingly. Industry analysts estimate the retail price of pork will be reduced today, with the price of lean meat expected to decline to HK$64-68 per kilogram. According to data from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of Hong Kong, more than 4,500 live pigs were imported into the city yesterday. However, an analyst says that the wholesale price of live pigs and retail price of pork may continue to fluctuate in the short term.

Hong Kong’s organic farming develops slowly

However, the local organic farming is developing slowly as the planting of organic vegetables needs more time yet yields less, and the land pieces in Hong Kong for organic vegetables are very expensive. The appearance of fake organic vegetables has brought disorders to the market. The consumers are advised to pay attention to the logo and packaging to differentiate the fake from the real and the Hong Kong Organic Resource Center is the only qualified authentication institution for organic vegetables in Hong Kong. In addition, China’s biggest organic vegetable processing enterprise has been located in Wanzai County of Jiangxi province.

Fullview Asia Limited recently filed a lawsuit with the High Court against former directors, sponsors, accountants and counselors of the liquidated Euro-Asia Agricultural for falsification. The respondents included 17 former partners of Arthur Andersen, including Nellie Fong Wong Kut-man, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, who acted as auditor of Euro-Asia Agricultural after 2002.

Schroders launches Agriculture Fund
