Hengshui, Hebei province continues to post rapid growth in consumer goods sector

Hengshui, Hebei province’s consumer goods sector maintained its rapid growth trend in the first ten months of 2008, with total retail sales of consumer goods reaching RMB18.2 billion (approximately US$2.7 billion), up 20.6 per cent from a year earlier. Of the total, RMB16.1 billion (approximately US$2.4 billion) or 88.4 per cent were from the city’s wholesale and retail sector.

China’s Wangqing County sees retail sales of social consumer goods up 27.8 percent in 2008

Wangqing county, Jilin province posted retail sales of social consumer goods amounting to RMB 817 million (approx.US$119 million) in 2008, up 27.8 percent from a year earlier driven by a series of policies put in place by the Chinese government to spur domestic demand. The wholesale and retail trade industry generated retail sales of RMB 705 million (approx.US$103 million), up 27.5 percent from a year earlier and accounting for 86.3 percent of the total.

Yinchuan, Ningxia’s consumer goods market posts sales of RMB63.5 million during New Year holiday

The consumer goods market in Yinchuan, Ningxia Autonomous Region performed well during the three-day New Year holiday. From 31 December 2008 to 2 January 2009, eight department stores in the city logged total sales of RMB63.5 million (approximately US$9.3 million), up 30.4% from the same period last year. Of the total sales, apparel goods make up the largest portion of 30%, with sales reaching RMB19.0 million (approximately US$2.8 million), an increase of 77% year-on-year.

Bailian’s e-commerce transaction volume hits RMB188 million during month-long shopping festival

During the month-long Bailian e-commerce shopping festival, held by Shanghai Bailian (Group) Co., Ltd., the e-commerce transaction volume increased 169.8% over a year earlier, hitting RMB188 million. Communication products, including mobile phone and accessories, are the largest contributor. In addition, digital products, home appliances and general merchandise also witnessed significant sales increases.

Toothpaste and shower gel to be listed as cosmetic products

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China has postponed the implementation date of the Administrative Provisions on Cosmetic Labeling, which was scheduled to come into effect next month, to October 1, 2009, given that some cosmetic companies still have a certain number of packaging inventories. Under the provisions, labels on cosmetic products, including toothpaste and shower gel, shall not contain any express or implied medical efficacy.

P&G does not rule out further price increases in China

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has raised the prices for some of its personal care products by 10% to 15%, and the company does not rule out a new round of price hikes in China. According to P&G Guangzhou, the rising prices of raw materials have put much pressure on the company’s daily operations in China, and the current price increases can just offset part of the increased costs. A anonymous executive at a multinational company, however, said that P&G just followed what other market players did.

P&G: unqualified potato chips may not be made by us

China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced that another batch of Pringles potato chips made by Procter & Gamble were recently found to contain potassium bromate, a harmful substance which may cause cancer. However, Procter & Gamble denied that the potato chips may not be made by them, as the firm has never used any potassium bromate in its Pringles brand of products and its only authorized importer has not imported Pringles potato chips from foreign countries over the past few years either. For such a reply, many netizens think Procter & Gamble is so irresponsible that it dares not to admit the fact that it has produced unqualified products.

P&G: No plan to raise prices for products sold in China
