Ph. D student sues over cinema showing film “Lust, Caution”

2007-11-16 Beijing

Dong Yanbin, a Ph. D student at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, has filed a lawsuit against UME Huaxing International Cineplex and the nation's film censor, the State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT), over an edited version of Ang Lee's sexy Second World War drama “Lust, Caution”, saying they infringed upon his "consumer rights". The incomplete structure, extensive cuts (most notably the much ballyhooed graphic sex scenes) by director Ang Lee himself, and fragmented portrayal of the female lead's psyche make it hard for the audience to appreciate the movie's art, said Dong. Dong is seeking apologies as well as RMB 500 in "psychological damages."?

Shanghai establishes alliance for digital outsourcing service

2007-01-18 Shanghai

Shanghai established an alliance for digital outsourcing service recently, while simultaneously putting in place unified service criteria. Shanghai digital outsourcing service providers can now march into the international digital media market as a unified force. Analysts pointed out that Shanghai’s designers have been taking part in producing skill-demanding projects. Most of the excellent animation films in the Shanghai market are locally produced. National arts may be represented in plays and marketed across the world after Shanghai designers have mastered advanced technologies. Shanghai has a long history of offering outsourcing services. Though designers are highly-skilled, a substantial amount of international business had slipped away, as service providers were vying for the business separately. Digital service teams will be able to work with each other on major productions since the establishment of the alliance.
