Giant Interactive posts a net profit margin of 70% in 2008

Giant Interactive Group posted a net profit of US$163 million in 2008 with a profit margin of 69.8 percent, on revenue of US$233 million. Shanda Interactive Entertainment, one of Giant’s major rivals in China, recorded a net profit margin of only 33.8 percent, on revenue of US$522 million.

China’s Shanda Interactive Entertainment sees strong results in fourth quarter of 2008 despite global financial crisis

Shanda Interactive Entertainment, one of the largest operators of online games in China, recently reported its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2008 and the full year. In spite of the deteriorating global economic climate, the company saw net turnover grow to RMB1,015 million, or approximately US$148 million, during the fourth quarter of last year, a sequential increase of 8.4 per cent and up 42.1 per cent over a year earlier.

Shanda to collaborate with Storm Entertainment on game operation

Shanda, a leading interactive entertainment media company in China, announced a strategic partnership with Storm Entertainment, to operate the latter's online game, Yuyan Online. With the partnership, Shanda's online game platform will be open to Yuyan Online. Meanwhile, Storm Entertainment will share Shanda's outstanding user resources and other profitable service channels.

China’s online gaming sector records sales of RMB 18.3 billion

For 2008, China’s online gaming sector recorded sales of RMB 18.3 billion, or approximately US$2.7 billion. Industry insiders expected that the number of online game players will exceed 90 million in the country in 2013, and that combined sales of the sector will reach RMB 40 billion, or approximately US$5.8 billion.

China to develop commercial operation model for mobile online game market

According to the latest data released by Analysys International, the Chinese mobile online game market achieved revenues of RMV143 million (or approx. US$21 million) in 2008, accounting for 10 per cent of the country’s mobile game market’s total. Analysys International expects China’s mobile game market to increase to RMB1.9 billion (approx. US$286 million) in 2009. The increase is partly attributable to a commercial operation model that will be developed for the mobile online game sector.

Chinese online game sector’s exports top US$100m

While the financial crisis has impacted a range of sectors worldwide, the Chinese online game sector is experiencing rapid growth. Consulting firm iResearch’s latest report says that Chinese online game vendors’ exports are expected to have nearly doubled to US$100 million during last year when compared with the US$55 million recorded a year ago. NetDragon Websoft and Perfect World are among the leading Chinese online game exporters.

10,000 influx for East Asian Games to be held in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is ready to welcome more than 10,000 visitors, athletes and team officials to East Asian Games to be held in the city next December despite the financial crisis. Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Carrie Yau Tsang Ka-lai said at least 4,000 athletes and team officials will attend the Games which are expected to attract visitors from around the region and that the government will work with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to promote the event.

Chinese game sector’s annual output value expected to top US$7.9bn

The Chinese game sector’s annual output value for the full year 2008 is expected to top US$7.9 billion, in which online games account for more than 38 percent, according to a report recently released by the game software department of the China Software Industry Association. China is now home to over 550 online game vendors, with a total annual revenue exceeding US$2.9 billion.

Game industry becomes Beijing’s second largest service industry

Chen Dong, vice minister of the Beijing Municipal Propaganda department, disclosed at the 2008 Annual Conference of Chinese e-Game Industry that, game industry has become Beijing’s second largest service industry, just next to financial sector. Beijing is now home to 41 large- and medium-sized game companies that employ 87200 people, according to Chen.
