37 intellectual property projects signed in Changsha

The 2008 China Intellectual Property & Capital Match-Making Conference was held in Changsha, Hunan province today. A total of 37 projects were signed at the conference, with a combined value of RMB339 million, demonstrating the attractiveness of intellectual property projects amid the worldwide financial crisis.

China to Enforce Protection of Intellectual Property

Shaanxi Carries out Special Campaign on Illegal Pre-installation of Computer Software

China Kicks off 2008 Special Campaign to Crack down on Copyright Infringement over Internet

China’s responsible authorities have kicked off a four-month special campaign to crack down on copyright infringement over Internet, in a move to protect the legitimate rights of copyright owners. The campaign, which gives priority to video websites, will require responsible regulatory agencies to enhance their supervision on websites concerning music, movies, software, books and games, helping develop an effective copyright management regime.
 

Individual Consumers Key to Illegal Software Reduction

Legal software’s significant higher prices than illegal ones and the technical barriers for other software firms except Microsoft have been the two obstacles for eliminating or reducing use of illegal office software. At the beginning of 2006, the National Copyright Administration of China issued a notice jointly with several other ministries of the country, ordering that all homemade computers must be preinstalled with legal operating systems and that all governmental offices must use legal software in their computers, which has dramatically decreased the software piracy rate in the country. However, reduction of illegal software should depend on not only government procurement but also individual consumers.

China’s State Council Releases National IPR Strategy Program

China’s State Council recently released national strategy on intellectual property rights (IPR) protection. According to the strategy, China will be built into a country with a high level in creation, application and management of intellectual property rights by the end of 2020. In addition, the strategy also targets to promote China to achieve significant improvement in intellectual property protection in next 5 years.

SIPO Deputy Director Zhang Qin: China’s Computer Software Piracy Rate Is 41% Rather than 86% Announced by Overseas Institution

Zhang Qin, deputy director of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) said during an exclusive interview with a channel of Sina.com on 28 May, on which the China software piracy study 2007 was unveiled, that China’s computer software piracy rate is 41% rather than 86% announced by Business Software Alliance (BSA) in mid-May. Zhang noted, China’s computer software piracy has dropped 11 percentage points to 41% for 2007, adding that the country has achieved significant progress in adoption of legal software by enterprises.

China Software Piracy Study 2007 to Be Released Today

China software piracy study 2007, commissioned by the State Intellectual Property Office of China and conducted by chinalabs.com will be released today (May 28). By then, the report will be announced in detail. In addition, a seminar concerning software piracy in China will also be held. The study data concerning software piracy in China that are often used by overseas enterprises are generally conducted by IDC and commissioned by BSA. However, data from the two parties differ materially. Professionals from both home and abroad will discuss the matter at the seminar on May 28.
