Chongqing’s motorcycle industry sees growth in Q1

The output and sales of motorcycles in Chongqing reached 326,000 units and 351,000 units respectively in the first quarter of this year, up 5.5 percent and 11.1 percent year-on-year respectively. Though motorcycle manufacturers suffered from the global financial crisis, Chongqing’s motorcycle exports still accounted approximately 50 percent of the country’s total.

American Bureau of Shipping opens Ningbo office

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the world's most famous classification society, recently opened an office in Ningbo Portman Plaza, which is located in China's Zhejiang province, after Det Norske Veritas marched into the plaza. The entry of internationally recognized classification societies in Ningbo is expected to help city's shipbuilding sector expand in overseas markets.

Chongqing equipment manufacturing sector's value of industrial output up 7.2%

Value of industrial output in Chongqing's equipment manufacturing sector reached RBM9,920 million (US$1,452 million) during the first two months of 2009, up 7.2 percent from a year earlier, despite the global financial crisis. For the two months, real exports from the city totaled RMB560 million (US$82 million), a year-on-year rise of 9.8 percent. With the Chinese government's stimulus packages in place, the sector is endeavoring to achieve double-digit growth in output value for the first quarter of 2009.

Key part of China’s large aircraft project completed in Luoyang, China

Luoyang CITIC Heavy Machinery, the largest cement equipment manufacturer and one of the largest heavy machinery plant in China, has completed the casting of the walking beam of 120MN stretcher machines, marking the country’s large aircraft production entering a new stage.The walking beam is a key part used in the country's production lines of large aircraft and will be supplied to Southwest Aluminum Group, a well-known aluminum producer based in Chongqing, China.

Weichai Power targets annual sales of RMB100bn

Tan Xuguang, Chairman of Chinese heavy-duty engine maker Weichai Power, said that the company has set the goal of achieving RMB100 billion (approx US$14.6 billion) in annual sales within three years. Through one of its subsidiaries, the company has spent 2.99 million euros buying certain assets of France-based Moteurs Baudouin with a book value of 13.82 million euros. In addition, Weichai Power will reportedly make more acquisitions.

China's Golden Dragon expands into lithium battery-powered bicycle market

China's Golden Dragon Group recently commenced the construction of its lithium battery and lithium battery-powered bicycle production facility in Xinxiang, Henan province. With an investment amounting to RMB230 million, or approximately US$34 million, the phase one project will have a production capacity of 1 million lithium battery-powered bicycles a year, which will be expanded to 5 million units a year. The facility is expected to generate sales of RMB2 billion, or approximately US$292 million.

China’s construction machinery market expected to rebound

The China Construction Machinery Association (CCMA) recently announced that sales of excavators and wheel loaders declined 42 per cent and 57 per cent year-on-year in January 2009. Though exports of those machines tumbled during the month, their sales experienced a slight rebound in the domestic market, the association said. Some market watchers expect China’s construction machinery market to recover gradually with the implementation of the government’s stimulus policies and infrastructure projects across the country.

China’s Suntech Power sees gross margin plummet in fourth quarter of 2008

Suntech Power (NYSE: STP), the world’s largest solar cell manufacturer, recently reported gross margin of only 0.6 per cent and GAAP net loss of US$65.9 million in the fourth quarter of last year. The decline in gross margin was mainly due to the negative impact of provision for inventory and purchase commitments of US$50.7 million in total, as well as the euro depreciation against US dollars and the slumped prices for solar cells. Shares of the New York-listed company have plunged since 12 February.

SMIC wins orders for 40,000 social security cards from Datang Telecom and China Integrated Circuit

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), the largest and most advanced foundry in mainland China, recently won orders for 40,000 social security cards from Datang Telecom and China Integrated Circuit. These ordered cards will be put into mass production in SMIC Shanghai Mega-Fab. For the first half of 2008, sales volume and value of social security cards reached 7.3 million and RMB53 million (approximately US$7.7 million) in mainland China, respectively.

Pharmacy emerges as Chongqing’s No.1 high-tech manufacturing segment

Pharmacy became Chongqing’s No.1 segment in the high-tech manufacturing sector during 2008 despite the global financial crisis, accounting for 47.6 percent of the entire sector in the Chinese city. Output of Chongqing’s pharmaceutical manufacturing segment for the year 2008 were RMB14 billion (approximately US$2,048 million), up 37.9 percent year on year. In addition, Chongqing Taiji Industry Group posted record sales of more than RMB10 billion (US$1.5 billion) for the year, a year-on-year rise of 20 percent.
