Production value in Chinese city Wuhan's telecom equipment manufacturing segment up 34.5%

Benefiting from impact of the 3G (third-generation telecommunications) concept, production value in the telecom equipment manufacturing segment in Wuhan, Hubei province, grew 34.5 percent during the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same period of the prior year, making telecom equipment manufacturing the fastest growing segment among all the 12 segments in the city's electronic information sector.

Huawei to continue global strategy in the 3G era

Huawei, a leader in providing next generation telecommunications networks, reaped sales of US$23.3 billion last year with international sales accounting for 75 percent, up from 43 percent in 2004. Huawei has developed R&D capabilities and provides solutions for WCDMA, TD-SCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies, with special expertise in WCDMA. As a WCDMA license was not issued to China Mobile, a close partner with Huawei, the competition between Huawei and ZTE is expected to scale up, making it necessary for the company to expand its international business.

China Telecom net profit down 96% in 2008

China Telecom, the country's largest fixed-line operator, recently reported a net profit of RMB 979 million (US$143 million) in 2008, tumbling 96 per cent year-on-year. The plunge in profit was mainly due to losses of RMB 3.4 billion (US$497 million) caused by natural disasters and the impairment of Personal Handy-Phone System (PHS) assets of RMB 24 billion (US$3.5 billion). The operator recorded revenue of RMB 185 billion (US$27 billion), up 4 per cent over a year earlier.

Chinese manufacturer enhances cooperation with French telecom operator on UMTS network expansion

ZTE Corporation, a leading manufacturer and solution provider of wireless base stations, terminals and networking products in China, recently announced that it has deepened its cooperation with French telecom operator Outremer Telecom (OMT) by signing an agreement for expansion of the French operator’s UMTS (WCDMA) network, marking a new breakthrough by ZTE in Europe after its successful access to such Asian markets as Romania, Turkey and Estonia.

Huawei reports sales up 46% in 2008

Huawei, a world-leading telecom solutions provider in China, reported a year-on-year increase of 46 percent in sales to US$23.3 billion in 2008, despite the impact of the worldwide economic crisis. The Shenzhen-based telecom equipment company was ranked as the largest applicant under the World Intellectual Property Organization's Patent Cooperation Treaty last year, with a total of 1,737 applications.

China’s telecom sector sees slowdown in revenue growth

According to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, for December 2008, China’s telecom sector recorded revenues of nearly RMB 814 billion, or approximately US$119 billion, up 7 percent year on year. At the end of 2008, China was home to 340,804,000 fixed telephone subscribers, 24,832,000 fewer than a year ago.

China Mobile brand value reaches US$30.8 billion

China Mobile, China’s biggest cell phone operator, has overtaken its British rival Vodafone to become the world’s largest mobile telecom carrier in terms of brand value, according to a research conducted by Intangible Business. The brand value of China Mobile has hit US$30.8 billion, ranking first among the top 500 mobile telecom carriers worldwide.

Huawei contract sales surge 46% to US$23.3 billion

Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies said its contract sales increased 46 per cent year-on-year in 2008, to US$23.3 billion. Huawei normally announces only contract sales, while actual sales average about 72-75 per cent of that figure. The company also forecast sales of more than US$30 billion in 2009. While Huawei was forecasting declining sales growth of around 30 per cent for 2009, the company was in better shape than most of its global peers.

Hunan posts annual production of mobile phones of 5 million for 2008

Statistics released by the Hunan Province Department of Information Industry show the province posted annual production of mobile phones amounting to 5 million for 2008. The estimated sales revenue of electronic information industry reached RMB 42.5 billion (approx. US$6.2 billion), up 30 percent from a year earlier. The prime operating revenue for Hunan’s electronic information industry is expected to continue to grow at an annual rate of 30 percent in 2009.

Telecom sector in Fujian, China takes world-shaking changes

The telecommunication sector in Fujian, China has taken world-shaking changes since the country’s implementation of the reform and opening-up policy in 1978. From 1978 to 2007, the province had seen a 1,423-fold increase in total business volume of telecommunication services, with an annual growth rate of 47%. In addition, the province had witnessed a 1,509-fold increase in telecommunication service revenues, with an annual growth rate of some 50%.
