China’s tobacco sector produced 44.398 million cases of cigarettes in 2008, a year over year increase of 3.7 percent, despite the global financial crisis. A total of 44.08 million cases of cigarettes were sold, a year over year growth of 3.16 percent. China’s leading cigarette brands, such as Hongtashan and Yuxi, became a major contributor to the increased sales.

Manufactured by China Tobacco Jiangxi Industrial Corporation and priced at RMB 5 per pack, “Lushan” cigarettes with hard packaging will be available in Nanjing, Fujian province next week. The cigarettes, which taste mild and sweet, are very suitable for the Chinese rural markets. Noticeably, “Lushan” cigarettes with hard packaging have been much favored by consumers in other regions of the province where the cigarettes were launched.

Shanghai Tobacco (Group) sold 326,800 cases of cigarettes in January 2009 due to its effective strategies to battle the market challenges. Of the total, 265,200 cases are from “Chunghwa”, “Red Double Happiness” and “Zhongnanhai”, the company’s three major brands. The combined sales of the three major brands accounted for 81 percent of the company’s total, up 10 percent from a year earlier.

For January 2009, China National Tobacco Guizhou Industrial Corporation recorded pre-tax profits of RMB 1.3 billion, up 32 percent year on year, and sales volume for the period totaled more than 250,000 cases, over 50,000 cases higher than a year ago.
2009-02-16 Shijiazhuang
Zhangjiakou Cigarette Factory, a unit of China Tobacco Hebei Industrial Corporation, reported a year-on-year increase of 16.05 percent in pre-tax profits to RMB430 million in January. The factory produced 97,000 cases of cigarettes in the month, including 56,900 cases of "Diamond"-branded ones. The factory sold 96,900 cases of cigarettes, including 59,200 cases of "Diamond"-branded at the same period.

Hongta Group recorded impressive sales at the beginning of 2009 thanks to the market’s strong demand for the company’s cigarette products, including “Yuxi”, “Hongmei” and “Hongtashan”. The cigarette maker produced 664,500 cases of cigarettes in China in January 2009 and achieved a growth of 1.32 per cent in sales volume to 661,400 cases. Sales of “Yuxi” and “Hongtashan” cigarettes grew 21 per cent and 30 per cent to 102,100 and 320,200 cases during the month.

China Tobacco Shandong Industrial Corporation recorded a year-on-year increase of 9.8 percent in sales to RMB 2.99 billion (US$437.4 million) for January. The company produced 381,000 cases of cigarettes, with 402,000 cases sold in the domestic market. Sales volume for first grade cigarettes and for second grade ones was up 20.5 percent and 313 percent, respectively. In addition, the company achieved smooth transition of brand integration.

The newest member of the Septwolves family, “Haoyunlang” cigarettes, has received enthusiastic response from Fujian’s consumers since its launch in the Chinese province a month ago, with sales reaching approximately 1,000 cases. The strong sales demonstrate China Tobacco Fujian Industrial Corporation’s state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and quality raw materials.

China Tobacco Guangdong Industrial Corporation’s sales of its Shuangxi-branded cigarettes for the fully year 2008 reached 1,470,000 cases, of which 210,000 cases were made in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. This marks a major achievement of the cross-province restructuring between China Tobacco Guangdong Industrial Corporation and China Tobacco Guangxi Industrial Corporation. The restructuring started on 16 May 2008 in a two-way ownership manner.

Longyan Tobacco Industrial Company announced sales volume of Septwolves cigarettes exceeded one million cases in 2008, with sales exceeding RMB10 billion. The cigarette maker produced 114,900 cases of cigarettes in January 2009, generating sales revenue of RMB 1.2 billion and profits of RMB309 million. Septwolves cigarettes made by the company saw the best monthly sales numbers during the month.
